You can pull the complete tray out of the washer and take it to a sink.
While pressing down on the tab mentioned above pull the drawer toward you.
With the drawer removed each compartment piece can be removed.

Sometimes the washer finishes its cycle and leaves the fabric softener compartment full of water.
This requires a little dismantling of the washer but it s pretty simple.
Pour hot water into the bleach dispenser to clean it out and run tub clean cycle.
